Mercyhurst College is a Catholic liberal arts college located in Erie, an industrial city on the shore of Lake Erie, in northwest Pennsylvania, USA, with a population estimated at a number of more than 100 000 inhabitants, fact which makes it the state's 4th largest city. Because of the `sparkling` lake, Erie is also known as Gem City.
Mercyhurst College was established in 1926 and it was founded by the Sisters of Mercy of the Erie Diocese, led by Mother Borgia Egan, who was the college's first president. Mercyhurst currently offers its students, who number approximately 3 500, educational programs in a vast array of study areas, the college being best known for its programs in archaeology, forensic anthropology, forensic science, intelligence, music, dance and art therapy.
The athletic teams at Mercyhurst College call themselves the Lakers, and they compete in 2 NCAA Division I and 22 NCAA Division II sports, for both men and women, among which there are: ice hockey, baseball, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, wrestling and volleyball. Their distinctive colors are blue, green and white and their mascot is Louie the Laker.
